Expeditionary Groups

Also referred to Expeditionary Outfits, Expeditionary Organizations, Exploratory Companies or Nomadic Settlements.  These are small communities that do not have a permanent location or base of operations.

Setting up camp - VEX deploy mobile habitations during extended projects as they explore and prospect remote regions of Mars.

Setting up camp - VEX deploy mobile habitations during extended projects as they explore and prospect remote regions of Mars.

Most of these groups use a three letter designation.

KMH (KMX in English)

A resource expeditionary outfit operated by dominantly private Russian organizations.  The population is approximately 130 individuals and includes numerous families.  The contingent rotates using Novyimir as a primary base of operations, thus only 20% of the crew live a full-time nomadic life.

KMH travels in a caravan with dozens of vehicles, mobile habitations and heavy construction equipment.

Their primary mission is resource-based, however, KMH is actively involved in joint projects with the Novyimir and Korolev, with significant overlapping ventures.

KMH is a branch of the first Russian missions to Mars in 2039 and instrumental in the founding of both Novyimir (2047) and more recently Korolev (2072).

RSX

Rover Scientific is a research group largely made up of research scientists from various Earth-based organizations.  The general population fluctuates around 70 as members (and their families) have between a 2-6 year rotation before returning back to earth.

RSX does make periodic stops at colonies and other Martian outposts as mobile habitats and research vehicles requires constant re-supply.  Additionally, the lifestyle is difficult on members, without regularly scheduled rest and rehabilitation.

VEX

Vallis Expeditionary Company is one of the larger nomadic settlements with a population of 270 colonists.  Vallis is a private corporation, but closely tied with Marineris where they have a headquarters that employs 20 staff members.

Vallis is a natural resource outfit and deploys robotic mining operations for multiple businesses and colonies.  Vallis has more than 40% of the robotic workforce on Mars, including 'colony building' excavators and equipment.

VEX has been in operation since 2051.

HDX

Huá diàn 华殿 is company founded in 2057 out of Tiangong.  With a population of 320 people, it is the largest nomadic group, though the crew often deploys missions that temporarily separates the company.

HDX is involved in both scientific and resource development projects and exclusively works for interests in Huacheng, Tiangong and Amrita.  HDX built and owns a significant share of Huygens Spaceway, located at coordinates 56, 13.

VMX

Venture Monarch Company is the outcome of the failed UK colonization project.  After the abandonment of the British-lead colony, the colonists were given a new mission to secure British interests on Mars.  Though many of the original group ended up in Europa or Wendland, VMX continues to represent the U.K. with a crew of 300.

VMX does research on behalf of the British government as well as engages in multiple joint venture projects with colonies to secure trade of resources to Earth.

Colonist Tracking

Each colony has different requirements imposed for temporary and permanent residence, however all major settlements (with the exception of some expeditionary outfits) deploy monitoring and tracking systems on all individuals.

Location-based Tracking

Location tracking is commonly deployed in all colonies, but vary with respect to implementation. Many colonies require active implants to track movements where as others, such as San Olympus, use surveillance and 'access cards'.

Health-based Tracking

Several colonists have advanced programs in place that actively collect data on each permanent resident.  Standard vitals are aggregated to measure physical wellbeing and identify trends that could present health issues for the colony.

Mental wellness tracking (also referred to as Emotional Surveillance) is a mandatory in Marineris, Chariton, Mareotis, and Wendland.  Tiangong, Huacheng and Al'Amal have similar programs, however, are optional for colonists..

MAFL Uniforms & Colours

Season 2 Uniforms

After the inaugural season, EV suit specifications were updated by the MAFL.  During the post-season, clubs were required to modify components to adhere to the new requirements.

Many clubs also updated uniform colours and graphic treatments.

Each player's EV Suit is custom built.

Season 1 Uniforms

The EV Suits in season 1 were more generic, using more common components across all the clubs.

Martian-born Humans

The first natural conception and birth on Mars occurred in 2039.  The infant survived for 36 sols.

Dedicated research programs focusing on fertility and genetic modification began on Earth in the in 2030 on Earth, however, it took several years after colonization before progress was made with off-Earth child birth.

Mary Janet Backer was born in 2040 and represented the first official human born on Mars.  With a cocktail of genetic editing and prenatal care, the viability of proliferation of the species in off-Earth environments.  Prior to Mary, there were more than a dozen miscarriages and still births.

The programs vary slightly from colony to colony, however, there is consolidated ongoing research and study genetics and bio engineering in the attempt to accelerate healthy adaptation to Mars' challenging conditions.

2047 marked 100 local births.  Since that time, encouraged by many colonies, there has been a 'baby boom' that has contributed between 1 and 1.5% organic growth compared with the 3% annual immigration cap.

In 2078, the local born population accounted for 18.5% of the overall population, or 19,000 colonists.

Issues

Though genetic modification and bio engineering has enabled a thriving 1st generation on Mars, it is not without problems.  The programs are continually challenged to address side-effects as well as improve outcomes.  There is also a lack of consistency in the range of modifications parents have consented to.

In addition to physical traits and function, psychological factors are another significant area of concern for the next generation.  Mental health issues for inbound colonists from Earth differ greatly from those born on Mars.  With the 1st generation only in their 20s and 30s and growing up in different colonies, there are yet to be conclusive trends.

Controversies

How much change and the parameters of genetic alteration has been an ethical and philosophical debate.  The need for genetic intervention to survive is accepted, but how far alterations should be made is hotly contested.

The 1st generation, in particular, have grown up under constant monitoring and study, which some have accused researchers of treating them as 'lab rats'.

The Drift Generation

Some of the Western Colonies have coined the term 'Drift Generation' for those born 2055 and onward.  Unlike those born earlier, this group has demonstrated greater dissatisfaction with colony life and the lack of freedoms afforded to their Earth-born counterparts.

Restrictions

Unlike temporary worker or migrants from Earth, most born on Mars do not have recognized status to travel to, or visit, Earth.  With the exception of Huacheng, where offspring of Chinese nationals are recognized citizens of China, most Earth nations have unclear policies with respect to allowance of entry of Martians. To-date (2078), no martian-born human from any colony has set foot on Earth.

Readale Nash

Readale Nash is a professional athlete who plays with the San Olympus Titans in the Martian Aero Football League.

Nash-portrait.jpg

Date of birth: 2060

Place of birth: Mars, San Olympus

Occupation: professional aero football forward in the Martian Aero Football League, playing for San Olympus Titans.

Height: 6’11” (2.1m)

Career in Sports

At 17 years old, Nash was the youngest player during the inaugural MAFL season.  He was discovered  by Titan scouts prior to club tryouts in 2075, however because of his age, the club was barred from recruiting him until turning 16 and completing his academic program.

Readale demonstrated athletic aptitude in various school fitness routines, but excelled at Hoopz. a game originally developed at Marineris with derivatives played in San Olympus, Columbia Hills, and several other Western colonies.

Readale joined the club in the final 8 months of pre-season 1 training, but quickly picked up the rules and was a natural in both indoor and outdoor conditions.

Nash wears #8.

He was the top scorer in Season 1 for the San Olympus Titans, however, missed multiple games at end of season, including playoff rounds, due to injury.

Controversies

Nash is often associated with the 'Drift Generation', a subset of the 1st generation of Martian-born who display greater tendencies of restlessness and resentment to colony life.  Nash allegedly sought emancipation from his parent in 2075 and resisted completing his academics.  This, however, delayed his joining of the Titans rather than expediting it.  He has allegedly claimed desired to leave San Olympus and Mars, the later being extremely difficult as he has no status on Earth.

During season 1, he has numerous occasions where his attitude and public behaviour has required the club to intervene.

Like most Martian-born, Nash was conceived under a fertility assist program, including the requisite genetic editing of his birth period.

Calendar and Time

The Meta Olympia world uses the Darian Calendar for time-keeping, the system created by Thomas Gangale and published in 1986.

Meta Olympia is 60 years in the future, that run approximately parallel to real-world time.

A Martian solar day (sol) is 39 minutes 35.244 seconds longer than Terrestrial solar day.

The Martian year is 668.59 sols, which corresponds to 686.86 days on Earth.

Months

The Darian calendar has 24 months.  The calendar year begins with Sagittarius and the final month Vrishika.

The first 5 months of each quarter are 28 sols in length and the 6th month only 27 sols .

mYear 249

mYear 249 bridges 2077, 2078 and 2079 on earth.

mYear 249 bridges 2077, 2078 and 2079 on earth.

Weeks

Sols of a week correspond with the 7 day week.  In Meta Olympia, most colonies adhere to a 5 day work week with Saturni and Solis representing the weekend.

Darian-Calendar-Weeks.jpg

Seasons

Mars has corresponding seasons as a result of the planet's tilt, 25 degrees compared with Earth's 23 degrees.

In addition to the familiar seasons of Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, Mars has two additional seasons, Aphelion and Perihelion, due to the highly elliptical orbit compared with the nearly circular orbit of Earth.  This brings it much closer to the sun at some times of the year.

During Perihelion, the planet gets 40% more energy from the sun than during Aphelion.

Yvonne Barnato

Yvonne Barnato is a professional athlete who plays for Europa United in the Martian Aero Football League.

Early Years

Yvonne Barnato grew up in London 2 and came to Mars with her mother at the age of 11.  Her mother, Dr. Michele Findlais, a prominent robotics expert had a 6 year contract with an ESA project that required temporary relocation.  After serving 4 years, Dr. Findlais unexpectedly passed away.  Yvonne deferred returning to Earth to finish her school program.  After successful completion, she elected to continue her studies on Mars as a part-time, remote student at Leeds University (Earth) and simultaneous apprentice with  Geykon Bioteciob.

She cites her repeated decisions to remain on Mars were driven by the tight-knit friendships she developed in Europa's small school groups .

The close ties I had formed with the 4 others in my class, along with their families, outweighed any bonds I had with relatives back on Earth. It really was not a difficult decision.
— Yvonne Barnato, 2077

Sporting Career

Yvonne was recruited as a candidate for MAFL (along with friend, Nina Pisani) after being scouted  playing with the 'Barcelona squad' in the recreational 'District' league.  Yvonne was drafted by United while Pisani was later drafted by the Immortals.

Yvonne is best known for being one of the first goalkeeper in the MAFL who could consistently score.

She wears number 58 for Europa United.

Barnato was moved by United manager, Matthäus Reinmann, from goalkeeper to forward mid-season 1 in a bid to bolster the teams offence.  Her replacement in goal was Kevin Sulzberger, #48.
