Shot for shot, play for play, United and Immortals battled it out for the championships in a match that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the very last moment.

In possibly the best MAFL game to date, the two teams gave it their all on Tula 25. The first half was played cautiously, as both teams made conservative choices and plays. Lanka made three shots on goal in the first half, but was denied all of them by Sulzberger, who was at the top of he game today. At the halftime whistle, both teams were sitting at nil.

Scoring finally opened 4 minutes into the second half Lanka set up a perfect opportunity—Hagendoorn took the shot and sent the ball flying just out of Badal’s outstretched hands as he dove for it.

Plays were fast and furious following Hagendoorn’s goal. The Immortals scored two more goals in quick succession to take a one goal lead over United.

"It’s been an incredible season, and I’m just incredibly grateful to have this chance to be part of MAFL history

Barnato celebrates after scoring the goal that ties the match—saving UNited from defeat.

Barnato celebrates after scoring the goal that ties the match—saving UNited from defeat.

A crucial goal by Barnato brings the match into overtime.

In the final seconds of the second half, Barnato calmly redirects a shot from Dennis from the top of the box that sends it sailing into the far left of the net. In a battle of wills, Sulzberger fends off a flurry of shots from the Immortals offence, Lanka and Hagendoorn, keeping United in the game, and giving them the chance to launch a counterattack.

An unexpected lull on the left side of the pitch gave Covaci the opportunity to breakaway down the field—and she took it. In an impressive feat of dribbling and ball control, Covaci took the ball to the left corner and slammed it hard into the right corner.

The final whistle prompted a wave of celebration across the settlements as United players ran through the pitch in celebration

“We’re happy to have made this far,” says Lanka of the Immortal’s loss, “No one would have predicted that we would be taking on United in the semifinals. But here we are. I couldn’t be any prouder of our team and the fans that stood by us through everything!”

The second ever MAFL Championship trophy was handed to United Captain, Fuchs, who was lifted up by fellow teammates. “Words can’t describe what I’m feeling right now,” said an emotional Fuchs, “It’s been an incredible season, and I’m just incredibly grateful to have this chance to be part of MAFL history.”

Dynamos crushed by United in the semifinals.

Despite flying-high for the first half of the season, the Dynamos were devastated by United on the pitch today. Unfortunately for the Dynamos, United was simply the superior team in every way this match. The United offensive line was beautifully in-sync, and executed flawless plays that punched through Dynamo’s defenses. Just as impressive was the way that the defensive players anticipated Petrovich’s and Karaaria’s attempts to set up an attack, and strategically crippled their plays.

United Manager, Reinmann, wisely deployed Sulzberger, United’s star goalkeeper, who shut out the Dynamos. Every. Single. Shot. The Dynamos were clearly frustrated as the number of bookings and fouls spiked in the second half when they still hadn’t gotten a single shot past Sulz.

GOALS

  • 1ST 4’ Fuchs scores an early goal for United with an assist from Baranato

  • 1ST 12’ Barnato (United) intercepts a pass to midfield and heads the ball past a surprised Danilovich

  • 2ND 9’ Fuchs (United) picks up a pass from Dennis in the box and scores with a right-footed flick into the left corner

immortals celebrate after their hard-earned victory!

Immortals take out the Titans to advance to the finals.

Viewers across Mars held their breath as the come-back-kings, the Immortals, beat the season favourites at San Olympus Park today. An elated Parkar, celebrated with teammates after scoring the winning goal in the final minutes of regulation time.

“This is an amazing experience!” said Parkar after the match. This is definitely a far cry from last season, when Parkar was involved in an accidental collision with Yamen Warren that resulted in the first MAFL fatality.

Both teams played cautiously in the first half, testing the waters and sniping shots at each other that were easily blocked. Both teams exploded into action in the second half, however, with Lanka smashing through the defenses on a breakaway to open up scoring with powerhouse kick.

Immortals now head to Europa to face United for the Season 2 championship!

GOALS

  • 2ND 6’ Lanka (Immortals) boosts high to head the ball past De Sisto’s left shoulder.

  • 2ND 10’ Hagendoorn (Immortals) scores a low, right-footed flick as she dribbles past the defense.

  • 2ND 16’ Carballel (Titans) counters an attack in midfield and converts it into a shot into left of the net.

  • 2ND 20’ Nash (Titans) scores an equaliser with an assist from Terrell.

  • 2ND 28’ Parka (Immortals) smokes the ball past De Sisto with a right-footed smash for the winning goal.

Liu scores a hat trick, but it’s too late for the Comets

The MVP of Season 1, Liu had a bit of a sleeper season and wakes up too late to make a difference. It looked like Liu had finally figured out Danilovich and was able to get a hat trick on him. It’s a bittersweet victory for the Comets today as a humiliating MAFL season 2 comes to an end for them. mafl-s2-w20-g2.png

Immortals secures a spot in the semifinals today’s win!

The Immortals have made the biggest comeback of the season to make it into the semifinals for a shot at the MAFL Championships. A strong defensive line on the Immortals helped to focus the game towards the frontline, giving Kata a chance to open up scoring with a right-footed flick into the left.

The Titans’ uncharacteristic carelessness lead to passes going stray and shots going wide. There’s been some tension reported between Salgado and Nash as the two have a tendency to butt heads over training requirements and strategies. “Things are just a little stressful now that we’re coming up to the finals,” says Titans captain, Ware, “but it’s not anything we haven’t dealt with before.”

GOALS

  • 1ST 6’ Kata (Immortals) scores with a right-footed kick into the left

  • 1ST 16’ Terrell (Titans) intercepts a high pass and heads the ball past Badal

  • 2ND 10’ Hagendoorn (Immortals) scores with an assist from Lanka

Al’amal is knocked out of the finals by an unexpected win from Dongji!

Al’amal is licking their wounds today after a sound defeat at the hands of Dongji—who ended the season on a high note with this surprising victory. With Baddour suspended on a red card from last week, Farra was spearheading the offense on her own. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to carry the team.

“There’s some disappointment, at coming this far and blowing our shot at the championships, but overall I think we had a really good season” says Farra after the match.

Despite a rough season 2, Dongji is celebrating after today “We’re really proud of how everyone played this season, and we’ll be gunning for next season,” said Dongji captain, Ekberg.

United - Wuji Sports Club

United wins by a hair in extra time against Wuji Sports Club.

Both teams struggled for dominance in the second half as the score remained tied at 2-2 for over 30 minutes. Wuji’s performance was solid with the early game swinging in their favor as both Wong and Geng got some solid shots past Sulzberger. United narrowly dodged a loss as Fuchs scored an equaliser late in second half with a boost off the side of the pitch.

As stakes ramped up in extra, Wuji got sloppy and missed vital cues that allowed Dennis to break through the defensive line and smash a right-footed laser into the far left.

  • 1ST 14’ Geng (Wuji) scores with an assist from Alvi

Hagendoorn scores in extra time to break tie and win match for Immortals

The Immortals can’t believe their luck as they find themselves tied neck and neck with Al’amal for the fourth spot in the finals after today’s win. The Immortals had great control of the midfield during the match, creating lots of plays that started deep in centre to set up Lanka and Parkar for success.

The Dynamos were also in excellent form today, and maintained a 2-2 tie for the majority of the second half. However, an unexpected header by Hagendoorn in extra time flew by Danilovich too quickly for him to react and cinched the win for the Immortals.

GOALS

  • 1ST 4’ Parkar (Immortals) snaps a goal following a deep pass from Hama in midfield.

Comets - Al’amal Sports Club

mafl-s2-w20-g2.png

Comet defender, Bagdal, suffers head injury—not expected to return for remainder of season.

In a horrifying flashback of what happened a year ago, Brigit Bagdal was carried off the pitch in the second half with a head injury. A midair collision with Fayad caused the Comet to crash into the walls of the pitch. The helmet was not compromised, but the impact caused Bagdal a severe concussion. Medical staff have quickly assured the public that while the injury is serious, Bagdal is expected to make a full recovery with enough time.

The Comets had spent a moment in silence before the start of the match to mark a year since the passing of their teammate, Warren. “It’s hard to think that it’s been a year, and to have such a close call with Brigit—it really forces you to put things into perspective.” says Comets captain, Liddell Bradley.

Despite their win, the finals are out of the picture for the Comets. Al’amal is currently sitting tied with the Immortals—as the two teams contend for the fourth spot in the finals.

GOALS

  • 1ST 6’ Liu (Comets) dodges through Al’amal to score a hard right-footed kick into the far left of the net.

  • 1ST 13’ Guler (Al’amal) scores with an assist from Farra.

  • 1ST 20’ Ferraz (Comets) scores on a direct free kick following a foul on Liu.

  • 2ND 8’ Rahar (Al’amal) finds a pass from Fayad and makes a power shot that sails across the pitch, rebounds off the right post and hits the back of the net.

  • 2ND 13’ Farra (Al’amal) scores into the bottom right after Agre makes a rare fumble.

  • 2ND 22’ Marsh (Comets) dribbles the ball through the Al’amal defence to challenge Pour and score and equaliser high into the right.

  • ET 2’ Shelton (Comets) follows through an excellent setup by Barnet and Ferraz to score at a low-flying kick past Pour.

Titans are stopped cold by The Sulz, United takes the victory.

Although the Titan offensive play was well-coordinated, Ware and Nash effort’s were completely shut down by Sulzberger, the impenetrable “Fortress of Europa”. Both teams had taken almost the same number of shots by the end of the match, but Sulzberger’s quick reflexes and creative saves were what made the difference. Sulzberger’s smart use of the thrust boosters today propelled him backwards into the net to catch a hard and fast shot by Nash.

This win puts United in the clear for the finals. However, Reinmann has become increasingly vocal about the frequency of United’s equipment malfunctions, despite most of the equipment being manufactured by Feldspar Inc. “Something is definitely fishy about this–I haven’t seen any of the other clubs deal with this many malfunctions,” Reinmann was recorded saying after the match.

Both teams played hard on the pitch, depsite a malfunction in the life support system in Su’s suit during a critical point in the match Dongji persevered through with defender, Chang, as a substitute goalkeeper. Wuji started out strong and Dongji responded in kind as the teams traded shot for shot, and goal for goal.

An equaliser by former-trainer-turned-forward, Pang, resulted in a 2-2 tie that stretched out for the majority of the second half. The winning goal was finally scored by Ekberg 12 minutes into extra time as an increasingly exhausted Wuji made critical errors in their defensive strategy.

GOALS

  • 1ST 3’ Lian (Wuji) scores with an assist from Wong.

  • 1ST 8’ Cheng (Dongji) takes the penalty kick and scores with a perfectly curved shot into the top left.

MAFL Week 19 Roundup

Teams this week battled over the coveted spots in the semi-finals with extremely close calls between Amrita, Tiangong as they attempt to overtake Al’amal on the standings.

Dongji pockets a win after an unexpected move to fill their roster with a technician and their club trainer. They might have been the lowest ranking team this season, but this was definitely one of the highlight matches.

Comets - Immortals

Virgo 3 • Marineris Stadium

mafl-s2-w18-g1.png
mafl-s2-w19-comets.jpg

Comets are out of the running for the finals as the Immortals steamroll onward.

It looked like Comets manager, Pryce, tried a last-minute change up of the formation in a desperate attempt to boost the Comets into the semifinals. The change-up was ineffective at best, and self-sabotage at its worst, with the Immortals holding off the heavily offensive lineups with relative ease.

A great opening goal by Donovan set the tone for the match as the Immortals played cohesively and controlled the rhythm of the game well. In contrast to the Comet’s crushed hopes, the Immortals now have a possible chance at the playoffs following Al’amal’s loss to Wuji.

GOALS

  • 1ST 3’ Donovan (Immortals) scores with an assist from Hama

  • 1ST 6’ Talpur (Immortals) utilizes a clever boost to beat Bradley to a stray pass and smash it into the left of the net.

  • 1ST 14’ Obregnon scores on his free kick for the Comets

  • 2ND 6’ Lanka (Immortals) scores his 17th goal of the season with his signature aerial kick.

  • 2ND 18’ DeMarco (Comets) finds an opening down the left and takes the opportunity to breakaway to challenge Badal one-on-one.

Al’mal Sports Club - Wuji Sports Club

Virgo 3 • Al’amal Stadium

mafl-s2-w18-g2.png

Wuji surprises with a shut-out victory over Al’amal.

A long and tedious match was a disappointment for Al’amal as few shots were fired on goal and Al’amal was not able to convert any of those shots into goals. The majority of the action was focused in the midfield as the offensive and defensive lines were at a stalemate. A lucky intercept by Wong in the final minutes of the first half gave him the chance to sprint towards to the Al’amal goal and flick it over Al Pour’s head.

With this win, the heat is for Wuji, Al’mal, and the Immortals as they contend for the final playoff spot.

GOALS

  • 1ST 20’ Wong flicks in a goal for Wuji after intercepting and blitzing through the Al’mal defense.

NOTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS

  • Wuji forced to substitute more players than they would like in the second half:

  • 2ND 12’ Amer had to be substituted due to severe cramps

  • 2ND 14’ Olegnova suffers a minor sprain and has to sit out the remainder of the game

  • 2ND 21’ O’neill is substituted due to a malfunctioning thrust booster.

The Dynamos are in dire straits despite holding the top position for majority of the season

The Titans roared into Novyimir on the back of an eight-game winning streak to defeat the Dynamos and hold onto their current position at the top of the standings. Aggressive play at today’s match did not help the Dynamos, but resulted in two red cards and midfielder, Budnik, suspended for two matches.

A wonderful performance from the Titans today as Kelly scores her first goal of the season—a tie breaker after nearly 25 minutes of a stalemate. A challenge for the ball by Ware paid off as she successfully flipped an attempted breakaway by Karaaria on its head and drive the ball straight in too quickly for Danilovich to respond effectively.

GOALS

  • 1ST 6’ Nash (Titans) opens scoring after a blazing pass from Terrell sends the ball high across the pitch.

  • 1ST 12’ Samrend (Dynamos) counterattacks after a Titans free kick to score.

  • 1ST 17’ Petrovich (Dynamos) taps the ball into the right as DeSisto dives to the left

Dongji - United

Virgo 4 • Tiangong Stadium

mafl-s2-w19-g4.png

An incredible game for Dongji as they upstage United with unlikely substitutes.

Dongji was left with a difficult choice following last week’s match. With two key forwards injured, would Dongji be able to continue? Would they have enough time to recruit a replacement? Should Dongji even try?

The answer turned out to be within the team as Dongji manager Rain Chen approved two internal club staff for training and competition. The substitutes were Dongji equipment technician, Eddy Lao, and club trainer, Susun Pang. Sporting the number ‘88’ for double-happiness, Pang is one of the oldest players on the pitch at 36 years old. Dongji players have been optimistic about the replacements. “They’ve been part of the club since the very beginning, so we all think this is the right decision,’ says Dongji captain, Ekberg.

In an unusual move, United invited the Dongji team and staff to stay in the colony overnight and spent the night celebrating with their opponents. “Losing is always disappointing, but we’re league-mates. And Dongji has perserveredd through the worst of times. They deserve our recognition and respect, so we’re celebrating together tonight,” said Reinmann of the team’s decision.

GOALS

  • 1ST 9’ Lao (Dongji) scores his first ever goal, in his first MAFL match! A long pass from Cheng finds Lao by the left corner of the box, who was able to send it into the net with a quick left-footed snap.

  • 1ST 14’ Ekberg (Dongji) flicks the call with his outside right, for a smooth goal that narrowly clears the left post.

  • 1ST 22’ Khosla (United) slams a goal in right under a suprised Su’s guard.

  • 2ND 3’ Khosla (United) scores her second goal to open up the second half.

  • 2ND 11’ Zao (Dongji) scores on a penalty kick.

  • 2ND 19’ Barnato (United) intercepts a pass and scores with a bicycle kick.

  • ET 6’ Pang (Dongji) scores with an assist from Ekberg.

MAFL Week 18 Roundup

Dramatic shifts continue to be the main trend for MAFL season 2 as Dongji plays their best game of the season only to lose 2 of their forwards to injuries. It’s unsure whether Dongji will be able to continue playing through to the finals in this state. Meanwhile, both the Titans and United have secured a place in the playoffs, while the Dynamos, Al’amal, and Wuji contend for their places.

Titans - Comets

Simha 23 • San Olympus Stadium

mafl-s2-w18-g1.png

Clash of the giants leaves the Titans victorious.

Tensions are always high when the Titans and Comets face off in the pitch. But things are looking very different from Season 1 for the rival teams. Nash was seen back on the pitch this week after taking time off for his mental health. He was in fine form and sliced through the defense on a breakaway to open up scoring with a smash into the bottom corner.

The Comets held up under the pressure with excellent play and pacing in the first half allowing Bradley and Coronel to score a goal each. A well-timed change in the lineup, however, gave the Titans the opportunity to level the score and overtake the Comets as Langanag delivered a wicked free kick.

GOALS

  • 1ST 6’ Nash (Titans) breaks-away and scores after a one-on-one opportunity against Agre.

  • 1ST 14’ Bradley (Comets) scores with an assist from Ferraz

  • 1ST 19’ Coronel (Comets) taps in a goal with the outside of his left.

  • 2ND 12’ Ware (Titans) scores with a backheel flick into the top right of the goal.

  • 2ND 20’ Langanah (Titans) scores on a direct free kick.

Barnato’s near hat-trick dazzles and keeps United ahead of Al’amal

A reflex save by Al-Pour, kept Barnato’s attack from achieving a hat trick, but didn’t keep United from winning the match. While Al’amal opened up the game with a solid lead after goals from Ramin and Guler. However, the ejection of Fayad midway through the first half, and Gonzalez’s red card early in second quickly turned the tide as United was able to bring in fresh substitutes while Al’amal battled on with their increasingly exhausted team.

Barnato was able to level the score and bring the match into extra time where Fuchs flicked a shot from the left of the box into the goal after a breakaway. Although, not crippled by player ejections, United was beset by equipment malfunctions that have some suggesting sabotage.

GOALS

  • 1ST 3’ Barnato (United) opens with a solid intercept she converted effortlessly into a shot into the right corner.

  • 1ST 9’ Ramin (Al’amal) scores with an assist from Baddour.

  • 2ND 5’ Guler (Al’amal) brings the ball under control following a boost-assisted leap and scores from up high.

  • 2ND 8’ Khosla (United) carries Barnato’s long-range pass past the box and scores with a powerful right-footed kick.

  • 2ND 17’ Baddour (Al’amal) counterattacks after an indirect freekick to snatch the ball and breakaway for an effortless goal.

  • 2ND 24’ Barnato (United) scores a last minute equaliser to extend the game into extra time

  • ET 4’ Fuchs (United) scores a surprise goal with a desperate bicycle kick that hits true.

FOULS

Dongji - Immortals

Simha 24 • Dongji Park

mafl-s2-w17-g3.png

Exciting shoot out match that ends horribly for Dongji.

Dongji is in sad shape following this week’s match as two of their critical forwards are out of the season with major injuries. DaCosta may be out for the rest of the season after a midair collision results in a particularly hard landing. Meanwhile, Saqqat is definitely out of the running with a fractured leg after a miscalculated boost sent her crashing into the corner of the topside.

“This has been a really rough season for us, and with two forwards out—we’ll barely have enough players. We’ll find a way though. We’ll make it through.” says Rain Chen of the Dongji’s state.

Meanwhile, the Immortals have made huge gains in the last 6 weeks, but is it too little too late? The chances are slim as they would need to win the next three matches and bet on the possibility that neither Al’amal or Wuji win theirs.

GOALS

  • 1ST 3’ Geng opens scoring for Dongji with a right-footed tap past the left of Badal.

  • 1ST 9’ Ekberg (Dongji) follows up Geng’s goal with a burst of speed through midfield, and power shot at the goal from 30 metres out.

  • 1ST 14’ Kata (Immortals) retrieves the ball and scores after Talpur attempts a free kick.

  • 1ST 21’ Dongji defender, Mao, took advantage of a freak opportunity to blitz past a completely unguarded left field to take Badal by surprise.

  • 2ND 8’ Lanka (Immortals)

  • 2ND 13’ Parkar (Immortals)

  • 2ND 15’ Ekberg (Dongji) scores his second goal with another powerful right-footed smash.

  • 2ND 19’ Hagendoorn equalises the match for the Immortals with her clever punt over Su’s head.

  • 2ND 21’ Lanka (Immortals) dribbles past the midfield and scores a long-range goal.

Petrovich celebrates after the Dynamos win the match.

Danilovich shuts down Wuji’s attempt to challenge the Dynamos.

Wuji played offensively and managed to get 21 shots in, but less than half of those were on target. On top of that, Danilovich’s insane reflexes shut down 5 of those 6 shots on goal point blank. The only goal that got past Danilovich’s guard was a neatly executed penalty kick Hachette popped in after a feint to the left.

The Dynamo win is a great relief for Ludomir, but doesn’t quite guarantee the Dynamos a spot in the finals yet.

GOALS

  • 1ST 12’ Petrovich smashes the ball home after Nikitovna flicks the ball out of the corner to him

  • 2ND 4’ Nijdar scores with a dynamic aerial back kick for the Dynamos.

  • 2ND 18’ Hachette successfully takes the penalty kick for Wuji

  • 2ND 22’ Karaaria (Dynamos) fires a laser into the bottom right corner

FOULS

  • Wong becomes the most-booked player on Wuji with his 9th foul of the season. Ejected from the match after his second yellow card near the end of the first half.

MAFL Week 17 Roundup

The tides have turned as we head into the final 5 matches of season 2. We see some major shifts in the standings as the Titans unbelievably find themselves among the top three of the standings, and with the most goals scored. The Comets have been the season’s biggest disappointment so far despite a solid scoring record.

“Ware” in the world?! Raenia Ware pulls off a hat trick for the Titans.

Despite being a well-respected captain of the Titans, Ware has always been a mediocre scorer. While her numbers are nothing to sneeze at, Ware is usually setting up the plays for the more flamboyant Nash to execute. However today’s match was another story as she completely steals the show in a relentless attack against Al’amal—claiming the first hat trick of Season 2.

The Titan defenders were able to control the second half perfectly—containing Baddour and Fayad in their attempts to go on the offensive. Nash was absent yet again and was reported to still be in San Olympus. Titan’s coach has assured fans that Nash will return the following week.

GOALS

  • 1ST 4’ Baddour (Al’amal) scores on a direct freekick.

  • 1ST 16’ Ware (Titans) scores with a cross-kick from the upper left of the box.

  • 2ND 12’ Ware (Titans) scores again with an assist from Terrell

  • 2ND 20’ Ware (Titans) smashes a right-footed curve straight into the top-left corner.

NOTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS

  • 1ST 12’ Al’amal midfielder, Ramin, is out with a minor sprain, but is expected to be back on the field next week.

Wuji Sports Club - Titans

Simha 16 • Immortals Stadium

mafl-s2-w17-g2.png

A unbelievably close match as Wuji ends the Immortal’s winning streak.

The two teams traded goals as the first half was a furious burst of brilliant plays. Immortals forward, Hagendoorn, claims one of the quickest goals in MAFL history—scoring from the midfield just 20 seconds into the first half! Boosted by that incredible opener, the Immortals played hard, but was unable to get the upper hand against Wuji.

Minute before the end of first half, Alvi’s goal goes down as one for the books. His earth-shattering kick cracked the protective casing in the EV suit and he had to be whisked off the pitch amidst worried teammates.

Wuji claimed the victory after a dry and drawn-out second half with one of Lian’s precision strikes into the right of the net.

GOALS

  • 1ST 20’’ Hagendoorn (Immortals) scores a long range kick that sails home from the centre line.

  • 1ST 2’ Wong (Wuji) breaks-away after a counterattack and executes low and easy tap after faking out Badal

  • 1ST 15’ Talpur (Immortals) gives a flying bicycle kick what catches Seaton by surprise.

  • 1ST 26’ Alvi (Wuji) scores an equalizer from the outside corner with a smashing roundhouse of a kick.

  • 2ND 20’ Lian (Wuji) settles the match with a left-footed flick into the right as Badal dives left.

NOTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS

  • 1ST 17’’ Tagore is ejected with a red card after being booked for charging—Wuji midfield, Feimann is out with a mild concussion after the collision

  • Two Immortals injured this match: a minor sprain for Kaafi puts her out for a week, and a slight wrist fracture for Fox means he’ll be out for two weeks.

Cheng lines up to take his penalty kick against Danilovich.

Victory didn’t come easy to the Dynamos as Dongji fought tooth and nail.

It was a much-needed win for the Dynamos at Dongji Park on Solis. “It was a bit too close for comfort but we’ll take the win,” says club manager, Sergey Ludomir, of the match results. Dongji played with heart and perseverance as they powered on despite equipment malfunctions forcing them to cycle through the substitutions earlier than planned.

Samrend was injured midway through the second half and his absence left a serious gap in the offense, leaving Karaaria to net the winning goal in the final minutes of extra time. Samrend will be out of play until week 19 as he recovers from a twisted ankle.

GOALS

  • 1ST 3’ Petrovich (Dynamos) opens up strong with an aggressive slam into the top-right corner

  • 1ST 11’ Samrend (Dynamos) redirects a pass with the outside of his right-foot into the left of the net.

  • 2ND 16’ Ekberg (Dongji) punts a stray pass past Danilovich’s head before he can react.

  • 2ND 24’ Cheng (Dongji) takes a penalty kick and nails it with a deceptive tap into the left while Danilovich dived right.

  • ET 2’ Karaaria (Dynamos) flips the ball over heads with a slow lob into a net that Su could not reach in time.

United - Comets

Simha 17 • Europa Stadium

mafl-s2-w16-g4.png

Comets hit hard, but United stands strong and hits smarter.

Pernet is back on the field following full recovery from a fractured arm—and she’s back with a vengeance. The United forward had been out of commission since week 6, but her absence has not dulled her offensive abilities as she pulled off a neat top-side boost to intercept a high pass and counterattack with a straight smash into the goal.

The Comets played hard, but without the finesse that one would expect from last year’s MAFL champions. Their physical intensity turned out more fouls than goals. With their lacklustre performance so far, the Comets are statistically out of the running for this seasons championships.

GOALS

  • 1ST 7’ Pernet (United) pulls of a downward smash of the ball with her heel following a top-side boost.

  • 1ST 18’ Barnato (United) scores with an assist from Khosla

  • 2ND 3’ Houghton (Comets) receives a beautiful long range lob from Liu to punt it into the top right.

  • 2ND 13’ Khosla (United) scores with an assist from Fuchs

  • 2ND 20’ DeMarco (Comets) redirects a pass with a slide tackle—pushing it into the goal.

The Immortals continue their winning streak against Al’amal.

Andam Mirza has had a perfect record since axing Veduva and replacing him as the Immortals coach. Under his guidance, the Immortals have been performing like a completely different team. The match is close, but Al’amal clearly loses their edge after Baddour is handed his second yellow card and ejected from the match during ET.

Lanka took quick advantage of Al’amal’s shorthanded situation and finished the match with a long range aerial strike that streaked past the Al’amal defenses and blew past Pour.

The Titans celebrate as they end week 16 at the top of the standings. An unbelievable performance from Titans goalkeeper, Icilio DeSisto. His efforts completely shut out the Wuji’s offensive efforts and catapulted the Titans to the top of the standings.

Liang was frustrated on every turn, despite some great set ups from Hachette and Alvi. They were unable to get through De Sisto’s guard. Terrell really shone this week as she filled in the offensive gap in Nash’s absence.

Nash was not seen on the pitch today. Sources have confirmed that Nash had voluntarily decided to sit out this match because of Hou’s death the previous week.

United wins by a hair as they challenge the Dynamos at home.

Another devastating loss for the Dynamos this week as Ivanova smashes one past Danilovich in extra time.. Dynamos club manager is concerned with the team’s recent performance, and reasonably so, seeing as there are only 5 regular season matches remaining before the we start moving into the finals.

An unusual number of United players had to be pulled off the field due to EV suit malfunctions. United club manager, Reinmann, has requested a comprehensive diagnosis of all the equipment post-match after multiple suits displayed the same error alert.

Dongji - Comets

Comets and Dongji both remember their missing team members on the pitch this week.

Both teams paid homage to their fallen team members before the match started at Dongji Park. A minute of silence was observed for Hou, who was found dead of suicide in the team vehicle last week, and for Warren, who passed away last year after an accident on the pitch.

“I think we were the right team to be on the pitch with Dongji this week,” says Comets captain, Bradley, or the match today. Although the mood was sombre, Dongji played their hearts out on the field and an unusually large number of tickets were sold out as visitors attended the match to show their support.

While the Comets were victorious this match, it’s clear they have a lot of work to do if they want to make it to the finals this season.

GOALS

  • 1ST 12’ Ferraz (Comets) scores with a breakneck smash from the left of the box.

Immortals picks up a third victory at home!

Teams and fans alike are elated after the Immortal’s third victory in a row! The reigning underdogs of the Season 2 have started making a strong and completely unexpected comeback—sparked by the departure of former coach Cezar Veduva.

A close, close call for the Immortals as United forward, Dennis, missed the net by a hair as he took a potentially winning penalty kick in extra time. Aurak finished the match with a stunning penalty kick of her own—the first of the newly recruited midfielder’s career.

Meanwhile, United goalkeeper, Sulzberger was sidelined again in favour of Riva. The team took a hard hit in the second half, as Riva’s performance took a nosedive after halftime. His head was not in the game as he let 2 easy saves slipped past his guard. Disgruntled fans were heard yelling for Sulzberger to be back in the net.

Comets and Wuji face off again in back-to-back matches

A stars have finally aligned for the Comets as they finally break their losing streak in today’s match against Wuji Sports Club. The match started slow as the first half saw little shots—much of the action was focused in the centre-field as the defensive lines battled it out with the strikers. Around the 70’ mark, the game exploded into action as both teams bolstered their offensive lines with substitutes.

Newcomer Isabelle Marsh scores the first goal of her career with a perfectly executed kick that sent the ball sailing just over the reach of Seaton. This is an important win for the Comets as they look to turn their performance around and redeem themselves.

The Dynamos had dominated the top of the standings for the first half of MAFL Season 2, but this doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. Both teams gave it their all and matched each other shot for shot—requiring the game to be settled in a tie breaker.

Titan victory overshadowed as tragedy strikes Dongji post-match.

The celebratory mood at San Olympus quickly turned sombre following the match as Dongji midfielder, Hou, was found by teammates in the club vehicle dead by his own hand. At 20 years old, Hou was among the youngest players on the league and the tragedy has given rise to many concerns about the league.

Although colonist tracking and monitoring programs exist, participation in such programs are not mandatory in Huacheng, Tiangong, or Al’amal. Many are wondering if stronger measures need to be enforced to prevent such tragedies from occurring. While there is increasing interest in whether being a native-born Martian has any impact on mental wellness, there are still many questions, and no answers.

That’s two in a row for the Immortals as they proved last week’s win was not a random fluke! Mirza continues to build up the Immortals one match at a time, and the team is playing on a whole new level with his coaching. While superstar Lanka still leads the attacks, fellow forwards Hagendoorn, Talpur, Fox, and Naik are starting to play off Lanka’s strengths rather than around him.

Meanwhile, Dongji is having a sad repeat of Season 1 as they scrape through the second half after both Fan and Cheng are forced out of the match due to a sprained wrist and suit malfunctions, respectively. Dongji manager, Rain Chen, has taken the issue up with the club owners once again saying, “We desperately need more players.”

GOALS

  • 1ST 10’ Lanka (Immortals) scores a right-footed smash into the top left corner with an assist from Hagendoorn

  • 2ND 6’ Talpur (Immortals) scores after stealing a rebound away from Geng’s free kick

  • 2ND DaCosta scores the only goal for Dongji on a direct free kick.

One of Sulzberger’s many brilliant saves in the Europa vs Al’amal match.

Europa United shuts out Al’amal as they struggle for first place.

United and Al’amal have emerged as clear rivals in season 2 as they traded places amongst the top three slots on the rankings table. In today’s match, however, United has demonstrated a definite dominance on the pitch as they controlled the pace of the game and made Al’amal dance to United’s tune. Sulzberger was in the net today and thanks to his spectacular efforts, not a single goal was scored by Al’amal despite several brilliant strikes from the corner by Fayad and Farra.

“I know not many are happy with my decision to leave, but United is still my team for now and I’m glad they let me play,” said Sulzberger after the match.

Despite the triumphant mood in Europa following the match, things turned sour as over-zealous Europa fans accosted Al’amal supporters in a pub and heckled them with racial remarks. Commander Sebastien has since denounced the incident and issued a formal apology to Al’amal.

Comets are left dejected after their second loss in a row.

Tiangong’s Wuji Sports Club has been the least predictable club of the season so far—largely performing in the lower-mid portion of the standings, yet often pulling victories out when least expected. Today’s match was tightly contested as each team struggled to gain an edge over the other. In the end, it would be Wuji forward, Ozil Alvi, who instinctively trapped a pass and smashed it into the net with a right-footed laser.

Comet’s fans are despondent following their team’s string of five losses. “Whatever bad luck the Immortals were carrying—I think the Comets have got it now,” said one glum fan,

Titans have clawed back into contention with a 2-way tie for second place.

The Titans fire on all cylinders as they unleash pent-up rage on the hapless Dynamos. With 2 forwards suspended, the Dynamos were playing seriously short-handed offensively. Unable to keep the Titans at bay, the exhausted Dynamos were thoroughly crushed in the second half as a result.

“This was a direct result of our suspensions,” Petrovich and Samrend said, “We take the blame for this loss. The Dynamos are in a precarious position as their second loss in a row has allowed Europa United and Al’amal to become serious threats. Despite the anemic offence, Karaaria stepped up brilliantly and scored two goals for the Dynamos.

GOALS

MAFL Week 13 Roundup

Lots of surprises this week, as the Titans best United and the Immortals snatch a victory from the Comets. Meanwhile, Al’amal and Dynamos are neck and neck as they are currently tied on the standings.

Titans - Europa United

Leo 16 • San Olympus Park

mafl-s2-w13-g1.png

Titans triumph over United with an unexpected come-from-behind victory.

Although they struck first, United was unable to make any gains on the Titans and desperately held onto their one goal lead for over 40 minutes. They were finally defeated by Langanah and Nash—who has finally surpassed Lanka on the scoring charts.

After weeks of rumours, Sulzberger had confirmed earlier in the week that he will be leaving United at the end of the season. While many are certain the United goalkeeper will be headed to Wendland, no official statement has been made by the Wunder organization. United deliberately pulled Sulzberger in favour of Manfredo Riva this match. Riva played impressively, but was unable to stop Nash from smashing the winning goal into the corner.

GOALS

  • 1ST 12’ Barnato converts a pass from Dennis into a solid net-hitting goal.

  • 2ND 8’ Langanah (Titans) breaks away and scored into the top right.

  • 2ND 20’ Nash scores for Titans with a bending blast that blew past Riva’s guard.

Mangat breaks through the dongji defense to score the first goal of the match.

The clash of the Chinese colonies sees Wuji emerge victorious!

There was no love lost on the pitch during this match as the rivals prepared to face off. As soon as the whistle was sounded, both Wuji and Dongji threw themselves into frenetic offensive plays. However, the stars of the show were, without doubt, the Wuji defensive-line. Botrel and Chardin were completely in-sync as they contained the Dongji offense and created the opportunities for some beautiful counterattacks by Mangat and McKay.

Mackay’s goal, in particular, will be replayed for days to come—showing how she boosted off the wall to intercept and score with an insane long-range aerial strike from the centre line.

After this week, Dongji is at the bottom in the standings with slim chances to change the trend.

GOALS

  • 1ST 13’ Mangat (Wuji) scores on a breakaway from the defensive line—catching Dongji by surprise.

  • 2ND 6’ McKay (Wuji) scores with a long-range counterattack after boosting off the wall.

  • 2ND 15’ Geng (Dongji) takes a penalty kick with killer precision, curling it into the top left corner.

  • 2ND 27’ Repsas scores for Wuji with an assist from Lian.

NOTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS

  • 2ND 18’ Cheng (Wuji) is pulled out after being booked for charging, which resulted in him turning an ankle.

Al’amal ecstatic as they shut out the Dynamos for the first time in Season 2.

The bewildered and demoralized Dynamos were unable to get any of their shots on goal past Al’pour in today’s match as their 4-game streak is brought to an end. This victory brings Al’amal into a first place tie with the Dynamos in the standings.

Al’amal clearly got under the Dynamo’s skin as they played poorly and earned two direct red cards from Samrend and Petrovich attempting to instigate a skirmish. Karaaria was also ejected from the game after receiving her second yellow card for unsporting behaviour. In response to fan outcry, Dynamo’s manager, Sergey Ludomir, has released a statement saying, “Although MAFL is a competitive sport, we don’t condone unsportsmanlike or violent behaviour. MAFL celebrates resilience, strength, skill, and innovation—abusive behaviour has no place here.”

Both Samrend and Petrovich have been suspended for one match as a result.

GOALS

A solid win for the Immortals as they pivot after the loss of Coach Vaduva.

The match at Marineris Stadium was tense and margins for error were narrow as both teams gave as good as they got. The Immortals finally gained their fourth win of the season and pulled out of last place with this match—but whether they can keep up the momentum is the question everyone is asking.

Club manager, Andam Mirza, has stepped into the coaching role in the interim. In an attempt to change the club dynamics, he is urging players to avoid passing the ball to Lanka by default, saying, “If you have a shot, take it! Stop feeding Lanka. We’re a MAFL team, not a damn buffet.”

Post game, Comet midfielder, Marysa Waaijer has confirmed that she will be signing on with the Wendland Wunders. Waaijer moved to Tiangong to start her MAFL career as a defender for Wuji. Waaijer is expected to start in a forward position for Wunder starting season 3.

Immortals coach is fired after their 11th loss of the season.

It was a solid game for Al’amal, as they controlled both halves of the match to turn plays and attacks to their favor. The Immortals were outclassed on the pitch, and even Lanka was unable to bag any goals—with Al’Pour stopping his attempted cross-kick with cold.

More significantly, the club has been left shaken as coach Cezar Veduva was unceremoniously fired immediately after the game. In the words of club owner, Vijya Pandey, “Someone has to be accountable for this mess.” It is expected that Andam Mirza, Immortals Manager, will cover the role, but he’s in a deep hole and not likely in Pandey’s good goods either.

Titans victorious as Nash makes a great comeback to tie with Lanka at the top!

The match between the Titans and Comets was evenly played as both teams struggled for dominance on the field. Nash tied the game with a penalty kick and won the match with an long range slam in the final minutes of second half.

“This was payback for the finals” Nash said after the match, referring to the injury that caused him to miss the finals in season 1. The Comets lost a midfielder as Barnett was carried off the field for injuring her knee after her goal near the end of the first half. MAFL Week 10 Roundup

This week in MAFL, Titans are crippled by a shortage of offensive players, Dongji is left in the dust after their match with Al'amal, Comets surpass in scoring but lag in the standings, Dynamos win their match to reclaim first place in the standings.

Titans - Immortals

Karka 16 • San Olympus Park

mafl-s2-w10-g1.png

Titans terribly short on offensive power as half their roster is benched due to injuries.

The Immortals did not hesitate to take advantage of the Titan’s misfortune, landing 3 of the 10 shots on goal they managed this match. Had Lanka not been forced out near the end of the first half due to a malfunctioning life support pack, the Titans might have been worse off.

Things aren’t looking great for the Titan’s line up as Langanah and Terrell were unable to play due to a flu that has struck the team, Kelly is still recovering from her ACL injury, and Busara is taking care of the knee he sprained last week.

One top of that, Titan’s star player, Readale Nash, has not been seen on the field even in practice since last week’s meltdown. Sources say that Nash is on day-to-day evaluation before he is allowed back on the pitch. Nevertheless, he is expected to be back in play next week.

Despite a solid start in the middle of the pack, Dongji has since been steadily sinking in the standings as season 2 progresses. As we’re approaching the mid-point of the season, it doesn’t look like things are improving for them. Tempers were short in the team vehicle as Dongji captain, Ekberg, was seen arguing with fellow team members, with Geng stepping in to intervene.

Rumours have started amongst fans that Ekberg may be in danger of having his captaincy revoked due to his recent outbursts. Dongji manager, Rain Chen, has declined to comment on this saying, “We’ll work through this season as a team.”

Comets miss the win by one goal in an evenly-matched game against United

Despite their incredible scoring record, 31 goals so far, the Comets still trail behind in the standings at fifth place. While some of the other teams have had trouble converting their shots into goals, this hasn’t been the case for the Comets—who seem to have a hard time converting their goals into wins.

Barnato stole the show with 2 goals in quick succession, proving her prowess on the field and bumping her up on the goal scoring ladder. Wuji now tied with the Dynamos for first in the season standings as they add a fourth win to their streak of victories.

A solid performance from Wuji despite increasingly aggressive plays from the Immortals as the clock counted down. Immortals forward, Parkar was automatically red-carded for his second foul and ejected from the match midway through first half. His sliding tackle was deemed unsafe play, and Parkar will be suspended for the next match.

The Immortals have not been able to keep up with the scoring chances. etting Lanka up seems to be the Immortal’s primary play, but aside from keeping Lanka on top of the scoring leaderboard, it is failing to win matches.

GOALS

  • 1ST 3’12 Lanka scores a neat opener

  • 1ST 12’ Repsas (Wuji) heads the ball right past Seaton’s reach

  • 2ND 20’ Lian (Wuji) scores the winning goal

Amazing long shot by United captain, Fuchs, in second half sends the match into extra time.

United’s match against the Dynamos was an endurance race as neither team scored any goals until the final 10 minutes of regulation time. Fuchs trapped a deflection from Samrend’s free kick in the final minutes of the second half and scored with a long range kick from 63 metres that sailed over the head of Danilovich.

Despite Fuch’s efforts, the Dynamos scored the winning goal 20 minutes into extra time.

Comets take command of the field as Dongji is throughly defeated at Marineris.

The Comets win their fourth game in a row as they continue to build momentum. The Comets make it look so easy to score, as both Elliot and Dunn nailed their freekicks with Elliot picking up his parried shot to sink it back into the net.

Dongji is unable to get an effective offensive together as they are plagued by poor passing all match. Ekberg seems to be restraining his temper despite being visibly upset at the team’s performance. Dongji goalkeepr, Xue Su, definitely earned his keep this round as he deflected over 80% of the Comet’s shots on goal.

The women of MAFL steal the spotlight in Al’amal’s match against the Titans.

Favoured Titan scorer, Nash, was noticeably absent in the second half of today’s match. Rumours allege that Nash suffered an emotional breakdown during halftime. Detractors are quick to point out his seeming obsession with the leaderboards and claim that the pressure has gotten to him.

Today’s match is Al’amal’s first loss at home, and the Titan’s first win away from home.

GOALS

Al’amal is a mess after this game as THREE of their key players were benched in the second half—with Sodhi suspended for the following match. Immortals are stuck in a rut, gave game away amidst mounting frustration.

Although the teams were evenly matched on the field, the Immortals missed the mark due to sloppy play. Lanka's streak of goals came to an end today. The Comet's winning goal has been hotly contended by Immortal goalkeeper, Chamanda Badal—who claims that she missed the save by a hair because her thrusters did not fire when activated.

So far, no malfunctions in Badal's suit has been reported in post-match equipment inspections.

Fingers are beginning to point as fans blame Cezar Vaduva's coaching for the Immortal's poor performance. Immortal's manager, Andam Mirza backed up Vaduva, but promised change, saying, "Vaduva has innumerable years of experience with football clubs on Earth and we trust him. Dynamos dynamite as they school the Season 1 champions!

The Comets are left licking their wounds yet again as the Dynamos ran circles around them to take an early lead in the match. Though the Comets were able to net two goals in the second half—including an amazing aerial kick that spun the ball right past Dynamos Danilovich—they were unable to keep up the momentum in the second half..

"We've had a hard time getting the team to click this season," says Comet's captain Liddell Bradley, "We had a huge shuffle in positions, and I think everyone is still trying to figure out their spot."

Comet's manager Gordan Pryce is increasingly taking more heat as the team's performance so far has many shaking their heads and asking questions. Loyal fans however, are quick to recall that the Comets also took a while to build up the momentum that ultimately lead to their win in Season 1.

Dongji is thoroughly gutted by Europa United in their encounter at Dongji Field.

Ekberg and the Dongji forwards are shut down in all their offensive plays as United inexorably took total control of the field. Dongji goalkeep, Xue Su was left to deal with a increasingly leaky defence as the Dongji team started to lose their rhythm.

Al'amal Sports Club - Wuji

Cancer 10 • Al'amal Stadium

Al'amal keeps the momentum going with another win at home.

Al'amal hit hard and fast today as they built up a large lead of 3 goals early in the game. Wuji mounted a comeback in the second half but it was unfortunately too late to make a difference. Farra proves she can perform under pressure as she calmly scores on a penalty kick in the first half.

A late game scramble to find a sub for Al'amal goalkeeper (Pour) put defender Naaila Amer in the net for the first time. Wuji capitalizes on the changeup to score two goals. After an inspection and testing, officials determined the alert had been a false warning—much to the dismay of Pour.

Immortals can't break their losing streak. Wuji gives their strongest performance so far with their second win of the season.

Despite Lanka's brilliant plays and scoring ability, he can't hold up the team on his own. After the game, spectators reported Immortals manager, Andam Mirza, attempting to calm down the agitated owner of the team. Pandey reportedly screamed at Mirza "We're looking like fools out there."

The Wuji are in great shape so far, with former captain Hachette scoring his first goal of the season. "It's much easier to play without the burden of the 'C' on my arm," claims Hachette.
